There are 7,168 languages spoken across 242 countries worldwide, and about 40% of them are said to be at risk of extinction. While endangered languages often have fewer than 1,000 speakers, more than half of the world’s population uses only 23 languages.

Why not try writing in a language that has already been lost, or one that is endangered? Characters written on an iPad are stored in a database and randomly displayed on a large screen. A sheer, transparent fabric is draped over the screen, causing the images to blur and sway gently with the movement of air.

Characters written yesterday may surface, or those written a week ago may reappear. Sometimes, characters you did not write also emerge. Someone unknown may read them—or perhaps someone familiar. Even if the words you write are unlikely to reach anyone today, there was a time when many people used these languages. The same characters can never be written again. How they are received changes depending on the moment. Through the act of writing, you can experience that sensation.

Looking back at what was written by the end of the exhibition period, we found not only lost or endangered languages, but also cute drawings and messages of support for Noto, among many other things. It also made us keenly aware of how language can become less visible amid an overwhelming amount of information.

すでに失われた言語、または消滅危機言語で文字を書いてみませんか？iPadに書いた文字はデータベースに取り込まれ、大きなスクリーンにランダムで表示されます。スクリーンには透明の布をかけているためぼやけて風で揺らいで見えます。

昨日書いた文字が浮かんだり、1週間前に書いた文字が浮かび上がったり。たまに書いてない文字も浮かびます。それを知らない誰かが読みます。または知っている誰かが読む可能性もあります。その文字を書いても誰かに伝わる可能性は低いですが、昔は多くの人がこの言語を使用していました。同じ文字は二度と書くことはできません。そのタイミングによって受け取り方も変わる。その感覚を文字を書くことを通して感じることができます。

会期終了時に書いていただいた内容を見ると、失われた/消滅危機言語だけではなく、かわいい絵や能登への応援メッセージなど様々な内容が書かれていました。多くの情報で言語が目立たなくなることもリアルに感じました。
